Mistley and more – 17/02/15

A fantastic day out with Steve (@bitterbirder) despite missing the Surf Scoter at Wrabness and Bradfield and missing Lesser Spotted Woodpecker at Shut Heath Wood EWT. Other birds made up for the ones we missed though, at Wrabness where we started we saw more Bullfinches than I have seen in a long time and a nice Song Thrush that I don’t see too many of. Mistley was the best place of the day though, Greenshank, Knot, Dunlin, Turnstone, Wigeon, Redshank and Pintail so close to the road, but best of all were a redhead Smew and some really close in Red-breasted Mergansers which were stunning and excellent to photograph, will definitely be going back to Mistley. A flying visit to Abberton Reservoir gave us Stonechat, more Smew, White-fronted Goose, Kestrel, Buzzard and Marsh Harrier. Our last stop of the day was to Shut Heath Wood, we won’t mention Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers but Nuthatch and a handful of Treecreepers were fun to watch but tricky to photograph.
